Coach Shotwell joined the AK Gold Basketball Program in February 2014 as an assistant for the high school travel team. He has an extensive background in basketball starting with his first experience with organized basketball at 7-8 years old until now where he is the head basketball coach at West Valley High School in Fairbanks, Alaska.
Coach Shotwell played small forward for both Memphis University School and Memphis Central High. He was named all-conference in 2008 and named a Memphis Senior All-Star. He averaged 13.3 points, 11.4 rebounds, 6.2 assists and 4.2 blocks per game and was named team captain as a senior.
“I started at Memphis University School, which is a private, nondenominational, all-boys school,” Shotwell explained. “I’m very proud of the time I spent that because it’s the most prestigious school in terms of academics and athletics. I played for the all-time winningest coach in Tennessee basketball history there, Jerry Peters.”
After playing under Peters, Shotwell transferred to Memphis Central High School, where he played as a Warrior for his junior and senior seasons.
Upon graduating from high school he kicked off his college basketball career at Northern Oklahoma Junior College. After a year, Shotwell transferred to the University of Alaska Fairbanks where he majored in Sociology. He played two seasons at UAF before becoming the junior varsity coach at West Valley High School in Fairbanks.
Coach Shotwell is now enjoying his time building the West Valley High School basketball program as the Head Varsity Coach. While this is his first year Kimani is finding success locally with a very young and talented team. They currently hold an 8-6 overall record and a 3-2 record in the Mid Alaska Conference (MAC).
We welcome Coach Kimani Shotwell to the AK Gold coaching staff!
